Fostering a culture of philanthropy

Location:

Santa Monica, California

Description:

New Roads School is a college preparatory K-12 private independent school serving over 500 students. New Roads empowers students to disrupt systems that produce inequality and build a more just future.

Challenges

Engaged to test capital campaign feasibility, building fundraising capacity became the first priority. With a student-to-teacher ratio of 8:1 effective fundraising is paramount to fulfilling New Roads School’s mission.

Working side by side with the Head of School and development team, we introduced a volunteer-led annual campaign for the very first time; provided prospect research services, sorted and assigned prospects appropriately to volunteers; and built a compelling case for support.

"An internal assessment revealed the school’s financial needs which became much clearer, as did the urgency to increase philanthropic revenue."

K2 Role &
Results

The campaign resulted in a growth rate from $811,000 to $1,261,892, a 56% increase.

"A 94% increase in philanthropy over the previous year was a result of increased annual and board gifts, major gifts, first-time donors and restricted gifts."

Growth came from the number of new gifts at the five-plus figure levels and the 32% of parents who increased their gifts.

New Roads learned that parents were willing and, in many cases, could give more than they realized. For those who had not yet responded to the first solicitation, a $35,000 challenge gift brought the campaign from 56-91% within a month and a half. Such a successful year of fundraising gave New Roads’ leadership and board confidence in raising money.

All of this was made possible through our partnership with a very enthusiastic Head of School who raised significant funds while concurrently building the board with new members – candidates identified through donor research.
