American Academy of Periodontology Foundation

Averting a crisis in a medical specialty

Details

Location:

Chicago, Illinois

Description:

Foundation associated with the American Academy of Periodontology, strives to improve periodontal health through research and education.

Challenges

In preparation for a larger proposed campaign among the nationwide dental community, representing all of the specialties and dental schools nationwide, the AAPF engaged K2 to help build the foundation’s fundraising capacity.

The organization’s preliminary case for support did not sufficiently capture the attention of members or provide a compelling reason for philanthropic investment. The overlap of dental specialties was leading to the decline of periodontal educators and a dwindling number of students selecting periodontology as a profession. The specialty faced a slow-motion marginalization – an outcome that threatens the periodontology profession. Periodontists were not aware of the scope of their specialty’s looming crisis.

K2 Role &
Results

K2 designed a case for support and master plan for building annual support through peer solicitation.

"The campaign achieved a 354% growth in volunteer ambassadors and surpassed a stretch fundraising goal by 28 percent."

The result was a major expansion of the number and reach of member Ambassadors soliciting support from AAP members. Through multiple in-person and online training sessions designed and conducted by K2, volunteers gained skill and confidence, preparing them to implement prospect cultivation, solicitation and closing strategies. The rapid expansion and increased effectiveness of the Ambassador program has been sustained for over a decade. The campaign achieved a 354% growth in volunteer ambassadors and surpassed a stretch fundraising goal by 28 percent.
